It heats fine, but the fire never quite convinces anyone. You need a gas fire that reads as a real wood fire from every seat in the room . If the fireplace is meant to be the focal point of the room —and you’d rather choose the logs, the brick, and the front yourself than settle for what comes in the box—the Elevation X 36 is the one to look at. Choose a standard shallow-box unit instead and you’ll be warm, but the fire will always look like a gas fire. What Makes It Special The firebox is set deep, the way a masonry fireplace is, so the logs sit back in the opening and the fire has room to move. Underneath, a modulating electric ember bed glows and dims on its own, mimicking live coals, while top lights wash the logs from above—so the fire looks lit even at low flame, the way real embers keep glowing after the flames settle . Then you build the rest of it. Three high-definition log sets, ten decorative panel options from traditional brick to black glass, and a choice of fronts and trims mean two Elevation X 36 installs rarely look alike. Planning a TV above it? The optional Dynamic Heat Control system lowers the wall temperature above the fire so heat-sensitive things can hang closer. Possible Downsides • The heat-circulating blower is an optional add-on. It is not included with the unit. • Log sets are the only media. There is no crystal, stone, or contemporary linear option—this is a traditional fire by design. • Reduced clearances above the fireplace require the optional Dynamic Heat Control kit. Without it, standard mantel clearances apply. If you want a gas fire that gets mistaken for a wood fire, the Elevation X 36 is the right decision. The room it’s in becomes the room the house lives in. Make it yours with high-definition birch, driftwood, or split oak logs; decorative panels in Westminster, Newport, Old Town Red, Glacier, and Ledgestone brick and stone, black illusion glass, or Mirro-Flame reflective porcelain; and Zen or Whitney fronts with black or charcoal finishing trims.
