You need real heat from the opening you already have. If you want that heat to keep coming on the night a winter storm takes the grid down, this is your insert. Keep the open fireplace and you keep paying to warm the outdoors; slide the Rosedale RD3 into the same opening and it becomes a heater that works with the power out , run from the couch. What Makes It Special The RD3 makes heat without electricity . A small pilot flame stands ready year-round, so there’s nothing to plug in and nothing to reset—when the grid goes down, the fire lights and the heat keeps coming while the rest of the street waits it out. Most inserts give you one kind of heat. Add the optional hybrid blower and the RD3 gives you two: gas heat in winter, electric warmth in spring and fall —a gentle setting for the evenings when a full fire is more than you need. Run both together and you get the strongest heat the unit makes. Possible Downsides • A small pilot flame burns year-round. That’s what lets it run without electricity; if you’d rather have no pilot between fires, the RD2 lights electronically. • The fan is optional, not included. The RD2 ships with a blower standard. • The glowing electric ember bed is an RD2 feature. If that realism detail matters most, look at the RD2. If you want the fireplace you already have to become heat you can count on—storm or no storm—the Rosedale RD3 is the right decision. The room with the fire becomes the room the house lives in. The RD3 takes birch or oak logs; a square or arched black faceplate or a wrought iron decorative front; three-sided, four-sided, or trimmable black backerplates; and optional interior panels in Westminster brick, Newport brick, MIRRO-FLAME reflective porcelain, or black illusion glass, so the finished look matches the room it lives in.
